On Holy Ground: A Journey Through Faith, Family, and Loss

In my latest docudrama, On Holy Ground, I delve into one of the most personal and intimate stories I've ever told—a narrative inspired by the true events surrounding my mother's passing due to dementia. This film is not just a tribute to her life but also a reflection of the profound impact her faith had on our family.

The Heart of the Story

At the center of On Holy Ground is an 8-year-old girl named Jia, who witnesses a life-altering event as she watches her grandmother, Iris, pass away from an incurable disease. The story captures the raw emotions and struggles of a family that has become fractured due to internal conflicts. Iris, fully aware that her time is limited, makes it her mission to reunite her family before she passes.

From the outset, the film is shrouded in an atmosphere of tension and bitterness, but as the narrative unfolds, the audience begins to see the subtle yet powerful transformations within the family. These changes are driven by Iris's unwavering faith and relentless prayer, which slowly begin to mend the broken bonds.

Jia, the granddaughter, undergoes the most significant transformation. She begins to understand that death is a natural part of life, something not to be feared but accepted. This realization is further cemented when she encounters something miraculous in Iris's bedroom, an experience that forever solidifies her spiritual beliefs.

A Tribute to My Mother

This film is, without a doubt, my most personal project to date. My mother was a devout woman of faith, and her influence shaped my entire life. I felt a deep responsibility to share her story, her strength, and her unwavering belief with the world. The character of Iris is a direct reflection of my mother, and some of the dialogue in the film comes directly from my mother's moments of clarity during her battle with dementia. These words, spoken by Iris in the film, carry an authenticity and emotional weight that is deeply personal.

The Journey of On Holy Ground

Currently in post-production, On Holy Ground is a project that has required me to tap into my own memories, emotions, and experiences. It's a story that I hope will resonate with anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one, the challenges of family dynamics, or the power of faith in the face of adversity.

This film is more than just a narrative; it's a journey through the complexities of life, death, and the relationships that define us. It is my hope that On Holy Ground will not only honor my mother's memory but also provide comfort and inspiration to those who watch it.

As we work to bring this story to the screen, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share such a personal part of my life with the world. On Holy Ground is more than just a film—it's a testament to the power of faith, the importance of family, and the enduring legacy of those we love.
